Acer buergerianum in Bonsai: A Jewel of Nature

A Look at the Trident Maple: Native to regions of China, Korea and Japan, Acer buergerianum, better known as the Trident Maple, takes its name from the distinctively three-lobed leaves. Not only are these leaves uniquely shaped, they also put on a color show as the seasons change, from luminous green to striking reds and oranges in the fall.

The Character of Bonsai:

  • Sheet by Sheet: Unlike many other maples, the leaves of the Trident Maple are more compact, perfect for maintaining proportion in a bonsai. As the year progresses, these leaves offer a display of colors, being a visual delight in every season.
  • Crust with Personality: As time passes, the tree takes on a fascinating characteristic: its bark begins to peel in sheets, revealing a smoother texture and lighter shade.
  • Configuration and Form: Thanks to its ability to develop exquisitely dense branching, it is possible to shape a bonsai with a robust and well-defined crown.

Care Tips:

  • Location: Although the Trident Maple enjoys the sun, it is crucial to protect it from the intense midday rays. A combination of sun and shade will be ideal.
  • Hydration: Like many bonsais, it needs a constantly moist substrate. Balance is key: not too dry, but not too wet either.
  • Maintenance and Modeling: Pruning is recommended once the tree has completed its most vigorous growth phase, which is usually towards the end of summer. For wiring, it is preferable to wait and not do it during spring.
  • Nutrition: During the growing season, a balanced fertilizer will do wonders. However, in winter and autumn, it is better to reduce the frequency.
