Below you can see a small guide on caring for the olive tree as a bonsai.

olive bonsai

The olive tree, olea europea, is a Mediterranean tree that can live more than 1,400 years. Its robustness and easy cultivation make it ideal as a bonsai; it can be considered a bonsai suitable for beginners.

Watering an olive bonsai

Olive trees require moderate watering, you must always avoid puddles and have a well-drained substrate. The ideal is to use a substrate with akadama 100%. Excess moisture will cause fungal and root rot problems.

Where to locate an olive bonsai

Olive trees need good sunlight for as long as possible, they must receive direct sunlight to be able to develop correctly and avoid diseases.

Pruning an olive bonsai

The ideal time to prune an olive bonsai is just before spring. This is done to prevent the tree from being active and therefore losing sap through the cuts. It is recommended to do it before spring so that after cutting and sealing with healing paste the tree begins to heal and close the wound.
